Gaafaru, Maldives

Updated: Jul 9

I still can’t believe it actually happened, 5 beautiful days in the Maldives with my husband and a group of fun, loving couples! The uncles and aunties we went with were such a joy — so full of warmth, laughter, and affection. I really hope they enjoyed the trip we organised as much as we did. It felt like a celebration of life, love, and connection.

Fun fact about Maldives - The Maldives consists of 1,190+ islands grouped into 26 natural atolls, scattered across the Indian Ocean like pearls. Only about 200 islands are inhabited and we chose Gaafaru! Because of their unique reef structure, many ships have wrecked near Gaafaru over the centuries. It's a hotspot for shipwreck stories and hidden maritime history, which divers and locals alike find fascinating. Their community bonds are so strong — you can feel it in the way they move, speak, help one another. It’s not just hospitality; it’s genuine care. They look out for each other like family.

And their service? Top tier. Truly from the heart. the island has a long history of tuna fishing, their smoked tuna tak hanyir pun.

What anchored me most deeply was how life in Gaafaru flows with the rhythm of Islam. The call to prayer softly shapes the day. After prayers, you'd often see people sitting quietly, reflecting or chatting peacefully in the shade. The whole island carries this calm, spiritual atmosphere that just makes you want to slow down and breathe deeper.

Also… they have hanging seats everywhere. Yes, everywhere. And I may or may not have made it a personal mission to try every single one.

Freediving in Gaafaru – One Turtle, One Wreck, and a Whole Lot of Heart

I don’t think I’ll ever get over the warmth of the people here. The hospitality in Gaafaru is something else — gentle, attentive, and full of sincerity. Every time we needed something, someone was there, not just doing their job, but truly taking care of us. That kind of energy stays with you.

On the second day, went on a snorkeling trip, hoping to spot turtles and dolphins. And yes — we found one turtle. Just one. But that little guy stole the show and became the main character in all our videos. It felt like the ocean sent us a quiet blessing — small, perfect, and enough. We did catch a glimpse of dolphins, just for a moment — quick and fleeting, like they were dancing just beneath the waves. The ocean was a little rough today, so they didn’t stay long. But I managed to record a tiny bit on video — a small reminder that they were there, even if only for a blink.

I didn’t swim much though. My fins were a bit long, and I was scared they might hit the coral. And honestly? That mattered to me. Corals take years to grow back. One careless kick could undo something nature spent decades building. So I stayed still, floating gently, hoping my small act of restraint was a way of saying: I see you. I care. I want you to survive. Maybe that’s my little way of helping the world — and I hope it counts.

But the most surreal part of the day was visiting a nearby shipwreck. This wasn’t just a tourist stop — it felt like stepping into history. The Indian Ocean is rougher than our gentler waters back home. And during off-season like now, it really shows. The wind was strong, the waves wild. But there’s something deeply humbling about that — about watching the sea claim what once floated proudly above it.

One of the best days was when I was swimming in the open sea, surrounded by nurse sharks and little fish drifting beside me like living poetry. I wasn’t exactly scared - it felt more like I had entered their world, and they welcomed me with quiet grace. The nurse sharks moved so gently, like slow ocean whispers. In that moment, everything felt weightless, my thoughts, my body, even time. It was like being part of something ancient and sacred, as if the sea itself had softened just enough to let me in.

That’s all from me for now. If this little story calls to your heart and you’re dreaming of experiencing Gaafaru, Maldives for yourself — the calm sea, the nurse sharks, the quiet magic — feel free to reach out to me personally. I’d be more than happy to share more or help you plan your own escape to this hidden gem. 🐚🌊

Thank you for reading, and may the ocean find you when you need it most.
